“THE LIMITS OF MY LANGUAGE ARE THE LIMITS OF MY WORLD” ~ Ludwig Wittgenstein
Learning to write fluently and express yourself accurately and succinctly is an invaluable life skill that is worth developing and refining. Correct punctuation and sentence construction ensure that messages that are written to an intended audience are understood without ambiguity and with clarity. Meaning is enhanced when precise vocabulary is used that is an accurate reflection of a message that is written with purpose and intent. Expanded vocabulary can include idiomatic and figurative expressions that reflect the context in which the message is written and received.
Reading fluently means reading with understanding, at an acceptable speed and with expression, if the extract is to be read aloud. In order to read with expression, the content as well as the form and context of the extract needs to be understood. In our rapidly changing world, people also need to be able to read with insight and make assessments of different reading material, for example, newspapers, novels, comics, magazines, films, reference material, and even websites. Reading with insight translates into engaging with printed and digital material at both an intellectual and an emotional level – evaluating and appraising the information that is being presented.
One of the most valuable skills that people can develop is that of active listening, which is an essential part of effective communication. Active listening leads to a reduction in confusion, misunderstanding and potential conflict. Listening actively also ensures harmonious interpersonal relationships, both socially and in the workplace. Our course includes listening comprehensions which have been designed to enhance active listening and improve comprehension skills.
Reading rate is the number of words a person can read accurately in a minute. It is important for people to be able to read correctly and at a consistent rate as this improves their reading fluency. If people are unable to read fluently, their progress will be compromised.
The functional definition of literacy is the ability to read and write. This definition, however, can be considered too simplistic in the complex world in which we live. In order to engage fully, people need to read and interpret visual and digital stimuli and read printed material with comprehension and discernment.
