Reading fluently means reading with understanding, at an acceptable speed and with expression, if the extract is to be read aloud. In order to read with expression, the content as well as the form and context of the extract needs to be understood. In our rapidly changing world, people also need to be able to read with insight and make assessments of different reading material, for example, newspapers, novels, comics, magazines, films, reference material, and even websites. Reading with insight translates into engaging with printed and digital material at both an intellectual and an emotional level – evaluating and appraising the information that is being presented.
In addition to the above BOHE has included a section on Embracing Literature, in which different genres of writing are examined and assessed. This includes the writing of Shakespeare, Oscar Wilde and even Charles Dickens.
